Foodie Friday: Clever Koi – Local Asian Inspired Cuisine

0

Clever Koi has quickly become one of my favorite local Central Phoenix hangouts.  Owners Nicholas Campisano, Joshua James and Chef Jared Porter opened this modern Asian food & drink restaurant and have had so much success that they are opening another location in Gilbert.  They have also opened Born & Glazed, a delightful doughnut shop, and are working on opening their new concept Stock & Stable (we can’t wait!).  Since opening Clever Koi two years ago, menu items have changed, so if you haven’t been recently or at all, here’s my plea to get you to try them out.

Their lunch now includes a “build your own” bowl, which makes ordering quick and easy for those power lunches.  The “build your own” bowl begins with a selection of either ramen, rice, soba, or gluten free noodles and then you choose your protein, veggies, and extras.  Don’t worry, you can still order their dumplings and steamed buns at lunch too!

What can you find AZFoodie ordering:

Pig face dumplings filled with kimchi, sriracha and pickled peppers.

Stir fry with chow mein noodles, steak, bok choy, and broccoli.

For dinner the menu includes additional offerings like pad thai with shitake, bok choy, carrots and cashews, a duck curry with roasted potato and pickled peppers, kimchi fried rice with an egg, edamame and your choice of protein, spicy seafood hot pot with shrimp, scallops and calamari, and so much more!  The steamed buns and dumplings are a dinner staple as well, and you can also choose from additional delicious small plates.  My 4 year old fancied the teriyaki short rib, and by fancied, I mean he ate the whole thing and I didn’t even get to try a bite!

What can you find AZFoodie ordering:

Teriyaki short rib with apple, daikon kimchi, and gremolata.

Pad thai, listed above but with pork belly.

Pork ramen with pork belly, bamboo shoots, kimchi and a soft egg.

Not in the mood for a full meal?  Josh has you covered with an extensive bar menu.  With drinks like Fear the Walking Dead, 50 Cent Army and License to Drive, I think it’s safe to say you’ll be up for a good time. And you know what keeps me coming back to this restaurant on a weekly basis?  Consistency.  I know that anything I order is going to taste just as wonderful as it did the week prior.  So, next time you get a hankering for some Asian inspired food, check out Clever Koi and tell ’em we sent you!
