6 Easy Patriotic Treats Even Your Preschooler Can Make

1

The Fourth of July is right around the corner and it’s time to celebrate the good ol’ USA! Check out these simple and fun patriotic treats that both you and your preschooler will enjoy making—and eating!

1. Red, White, and Blue Trail Mix
Why I Love It: The possibilities are endless with this super easy snack from All Things Mamma. We used just four simple ingredients, but you can add your own flavor with dried fruit, nuts, or a different cereal. It’s so easy for preschoolers to help with because there is no measuring involved and any spills are limited to dry ingredients, which are generally easier to clean up!

patriotic treatsTake My Advice: Use a much bigger bowl than you think you will need in order minimize spillage while mixing. Also, during this time of year you can purchase red, white, and blue M&M’s, or if you want to make the experience more educational try buying a regular variety bag and have your littles do some color sorting!

Why I Love It: Festive foods don’t get much easier than this one from A Thrifty Mom. The only prep necessary is unwrapping an ice cream sandwich from the freezer! You can also make your own ice cream sandwiches for a little personalization and pizzazz, but when my little ones are involved simplicity is key, so we took the easy route.

Take My Advice: It was definitely easier for my kids to get the sprinkles onto the sandwich by dipping the ice cream onto a plate of sprinkles rather than trying to shake them out of the sprinkle container. Once decorated, these delicious treats can be eaten right away or put back in the freezer and saved for party time.

patriotic treats3. Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Pops
Why I Love It: If your kids are anything like mine, they love cake pops! This recipe from Love From The Oven is a super easy take on a cake pop with no baking or mixing involved!

Take My Advice: Use your best judgement on whether or not your little ones are ready for this one. The chocolate is very hot and could potentially cause a burn if not handled properly. I felt comfortable, but you may not. At the very least, I’d recommend increased supervision on this one.

4. Red, White, and Blue Parfaits
Why I Love It: This recipe from Shockingly Delicious calls for homemade whipped cream, but I made it even easier by going with store-bought. It is also easy to make a healthier version by swapping yogurt for whipped cream or granola for the cookies.

Take My Advice: While this one is relatively simple for preschoolers to put together, it’s not pretty! If you are making these for an event and want them to look nice, I would highly encourage you to be hands-on during the assembly process. On the other hand, if your goal is just to get your preschooler involved in making a tasty and holiday themed treat, then let them go wild with it. My daughter’s favorite part was crushing up the cookies!

5. Patriotic Pretzels
Why I Love It: This recipe from Simply Being Mommy was so easy that even my two-year-old got in on the action. The only prep involved was melting the chocolate. As my daughter says—easy peasy lemon squeezy!

Take My Advice: Just like the marshmallow pop recipe, use caution around the melted chocolate. The kiddos might also enjoy making the chocolate red or blue with food coloring or using star-shaped sprinkles to spice things up!

6. Brownie Fruit Kabobs
Why I Love it: Even if your kid isn’t the most skilled person in the kitchen, this treat from Mel’s Kitchen Café will still look and taste delicious. It’s easy, unique, and sure to be a crowd-pleaser at any Fourth of July gathering!

Take My Advice: Wooden skewers are pointy, so (again) use your best judgement on whether your child is ready to handle one solo. Also, if you want to make this one extra simple (and not turn your kitchen into a sweltering inferno during July in Phoenix), you can find brownie bites in the bakery section of most grocery stores instead of baking your own like we did. If you do end up making your own, go for a more fudgy texture so they don’t fall apart when you put them on the skewers.

Have fun and happy Independence Day!
